Social Graces Presents Our In-Studio
Our in-studio ballroom dance competitions are about growth, fun, and embracing the journey. And don’t worry — we keep things simple with minimal rules about dress code, makeup, and shoes. We just want you to focus on enjoying yourself, showing off what you’ve learned, and representing the studio proudly.
Whether you’ve never competed, or you’re a seasoned dancer, take a deep breath. We’re here to support you every step of the way.
We offer four dance styles for each competition. Students should ask their instructor which dances are offered in the next competition.

Competing can easily cost thousands, but we wanted to offer a more affordable option. By hiring only one judge and hosting the competition in our own studio, we’ve kept costs down.
The short answer: everyone! Whether you’re motivated by a short-term goal or love the thrill of the chase, give it a try. It’s about desire, not ability. We have Newcomer categories for those with fewer lessons. Do it for the joy and the benefits, not because you’re ‘good enough.’
It’s a fancy way of saying “group class” with a specific goal. Both Master Classes before and after the competition will be taught by Dan Callaway.
A private lesson with a visiting coach, like Dan Callaway. It costs the same as 2 private lessons. If you’d like your instructor present, it’s an additional private lesson.
To keep costs simple and trackable, and to provide a small discount to those who commit to the studio by purchasing a package of lessons.
A heat is one entry or dance, generally lasting 75 seconds. Each competitor gets five heats, meaning you can choose the dance and level five times. You can focus on one dance or choose from up to four dances.
Upon arrival, we’ll have a printed list of heats. Find your heats, jot them down, and get ready to dance!
You can choose your partner—most will choose their instructor. Keep in mind, due to the nature of in-studio competitions, some instructors may need to share partners. Consult with your teacher and pick a second instructor just in case. The judge will be focusing on you, not your partner.
There’s no strict dress code, but dressing up can help you feel more confident. Consider your outfit a costume that inspires you to dance your best. Bring your competition outfit to your next lesson for a dress rehearsal. Remember, the judge is looking at your dancing, not your outfit!
Leaders will have numbers, and since the competition is small, the judicator will quickly learn who’s who.
Before the competition, the Master Class will cover TBA. After the competition, Dan will address common mistakes he observed and help set goals for the future. Competitors will have the chance to ask questions and get feedback.
Yes! You can add five more heats for the cost of one extra private lesson. In the future, we may allow more than 10 heats.
In short, common categories take into account:
We’ve simplified this process, so see your instructor for details. The judge will score each Proficiency competitor with a percentage score for each heat. Non-Proficiency heats will be judged as first, second, third, etc.
Great question! If you’re worried about new information overshadowing your current focuses, work on something related to future goals or the next competition.
If you still have questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out. Remember, not every question needs to be perfectly answered to take the leap. Part of the fun is learning on the fly. The staff at Social Graces is here to support you.
So sit back, enjoy the ride…and
So glad I found Social Graces!
“My teenager started lessons in ballroom dance here over a year ago, and she has had excellent instruction from a number of teachers. She had also encountered a welcoming community of social dancers of all ages and learned how to be social off her phone. Safety is a priority, and the instructors have always communicated with me and my daughter what will happen in every dance, so we are never uncomfortable.”
